Lohra. “There has never been anything like this in Lohra. “We really are the center of the world,” said Mayor Karina Schlemper-Latzel, delighted about the unusual gathering in the community center. On Saturday, October 26th, imperial stormtroopers, Jedi masters, dark lords and bounty hunters gathered at a charity event for the local kindergartens and elementary school support association.

The people of Lohra have Karlheinz Schuhmacher to thank for the visit from distant cinema worlds and galaxies. During one of his photo sessions at Gleiberg Castle, he made contact with the cosplayer community and quickly invited them to his home community.

“Sure, the location in the community center isn’t as great as an old castle,” admitted organizer Karlheinz Schuhmacher. “But ultimately it’s about the costumes and the good cause.” The German Garrison of the 501st Legion, which is a group of costume-loving film fans with a penchant for the dark side of power, has made it its mission to organize regular charitable events on a voluntary basis to support. The same applies to the German Base Yavin of the Rebel Legion, which is more on the light side and had sent a Jedi master.

The children’s secret favorites were the two R2 units that Andreas Lukas and his wife had brought with them: They used remote control to let the legendary astromech droid R2-D2 and the pink R2-KT contact the visitors and talk to them.

However, you should not only take souvenir photos on this day. If you wanted, you could even train to become a Jedi – or at least complete close combat training with a lightsaber. Richy Müller and his team were responsible for this. He trained as a trainer for lightsaber fights at the Saber Academy International in Karlsruhe for over five years and now passed on his knowledge to young Star Wars fans.
In a workshop, he and other members of the Outer Rim Alliance-Outpost 35 taught the most important strike and counter combinations with the powerful weapon and also showed the young padawans how to move with it in the most cinematic way possible.

Anyone who was not yet a proud owner of a lightsaber could become one on this day. The instructions were included right away: Outpost members helped the children put together their own lightsaber.

In addition to the numerous characters from Star Wars, a Marvel superhero also joined the costumed crowd. None other than Wolverine flashed his adamantium blades in front of the visitors, providing another popular photo opportunity. The resemblance of “German Jackmann” Jan Schick to X-Man actor Hugh Jackmann is so striking that the Wetzlar native has even appeared as a double in films and TV shows.

At the meeting, organizer Karlheinz Schuhmacher and the cosplayers handed over a donation of 3,146 euros to the Marburg Children’s Clinic. This is the proceeds from a similar event at the Arnsburg Monastery. The entrance fees and donations from the charity event in Lohra benefit the kindergartens and primary schools there. According to Schumacher, 2,023 euros were raised for this.
