/ world today news/ “Last year at this time, I analyzed the defects and weaknesses of the outgoing administration and predicted that the BSP has every chance of winning the presidential elections. Nothing is impossible in politics. In the current vote, there is every chance that the BSP will become the first political force.”
This is how PES President Sergey Sanishev commented on the current political situation in Bulgaria and the important events at his regular meeting with the media at the beginning of the year.
“Undoubtedly, the presidential elections were the most important political event in our country in 2016. Firstly, because they showed that in Bulgaria there is a critical mass of people who vote against the status quo and want change. Of course, everyone views change in their own context. And secondly, the loss for GERB is of particular importance for this political force. It is a leadership party that clings to charisma, to organization, but also to the myth of invincibility. Breaking this myth will unleash more and more processes inside GERD. The results show that from a hegemon party, GERB has become one of the many strong parties of the day. And this is a huge change in people’s moods,” Stanishev continued his analysis.
“For the BSP, the presidential elections created absolutely new opportunities. The victory was not wrapped in a towel, because the principle of the pendulum no longer works. But God loves the brave. Cornelia Ninova bet her personal future, choosing the candidacy of Gen. Radev won. His election succeeded in mobilizing much wider groups of people outside the party. Now the challenge is for the BSP to convince these people that it can find solutions to their problems,” commented the leader of the European Socialists on his party’s victory.
“With the resignation of the government, the rulers spared themselves the February protests of 2013. The presidential elections also showed new political players. The rise of the partisans is a fact, and Mareshki’s party relies on strong populist messages.”
“The upcoming elections are the big test for the society and for the parties. For the first time in many years there is an audibility of policies. People want to hear different programs of the parties. This is a great chance for BSP, which has always been solid and has huge expert potential, to present its vision for the future. The program can be the basis of the entire campaign, along with the new faces. So the chance of victory for my political power is very high.”
“It is very important what will happen after the elections. Then most party leaders will have to choose between the interest of their party and the interest of Bulgaria. Different options for center-left and center-right coalitions can give a chimerical illusion of stability. I can say from my experience that it is extremely important to have a clear program around which to shape the future management. To prove that the parties participate not because of power, but because of the change that Bulgarian citizens are waiting for. Let there be no distribution and contracts for power, but a clear coalition agreement – with decision-making mechanisms in it,” warned the PES president.
“It is important for BSP to leave behind some old pre-election mantras and act responsibly and in the interest of the country. And not to be a hostage to the behavior and interests of our partners,” added Stanishev.
