This is how PES President Sergey Stanishev commented to journalists in Brussels on the decision of the Bulgarian government to change our candidacy for UN Secretary General.
“Unfortunately, it’s not a surprise to me. From the very beginning, support for Irina Bokova from the government and the presidential institution has been limping, and apparently some have also worked directly against our candidate, constantly undermining her authority and chances,” said the PES leader.
“Bulgaria looks like a country that doesn’t know what it wants. Before the decisive phase of the contest, which will be in October, neither side is changing its candidate. Even those who are behind Irina Bokova do not change their minds,” Stanishev also said.
He stated that the interference of European institutions, political families, comments of MPs, etc. they have no bearing on the bottom line and are nothing more than an attempt to diffuse responsibility, since the contest is between states, with the permanent members of the UN Security Council playing a key role.
Stanishev is of the opinion that raising a new candidacy does not increase Bulgaria’s chances in the race, and until now the government has created such a mess that undermines both candidacies. He pointed out that a number of regional balances are also taken into account in the complex UN system, and pointed out: “If Mrs. Bokova is not elected UN Secretary General, she remains UNESCO Director General. In such a scenario, it is unlikely that two key UN posts will go to one country.”
“In that sense, it’s very likely the new application to serve someone else’s interest. I don’t know whose interest this is, but it is not Bulgaria’s. Unfortunately, the government appears to be susceptible to external influences and internal, non-public ones. But it should be clear that the political responsibility for this lies unequivocally with the Bulgarian institutions and the ruling party. This will be a serious failure of the government in every respect and a shame for Bulgaria. By entering this “game”, Mrs. Georgieva also assumes part of this responsibility,” concluded Stanishev.
