Standoff escalates Yemen Houthi threats to launch more attacks on Saudi ArabiaFly into the homes of ordinary people
The Yemeni Houthis announced on February 28 that they had attacked Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh and other places, and threatened to launch more attacks. The Saudi side said on the 27th that the multinational coalition intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthi armed forces.
The Houthi-controlled Masira TV station quoted the spokesperson of the armed organization Yahya Saria as saying: “This operation used a ballistic missile and 15 drones… the target was a sensitive area in Riyadh.”
“As long as the aggression and blockade against our country continue, our actions will continue and will expand.” Sarria said.
The Houthis have recently stepped up their offensive against Marib province in northern Yemen. Agence France-Presse reported that in order to prevent the Houthis from seizing the last northern stronghold of the Yemeni government, the Saudi-led multinational coalition attacked the Houthis with air strikes, and the latter intensified its attacks on targets in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi National Television reported on the 27th that multinational coalition forces intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthi armed forces over Riyadh that night.
A video uploaded to social media shows that the anti-missile system destroys missiles at night and flashes of explosions can be seen over the city of Riyadh. Saudi News Television said that missile fragments were scattered in multiple residential areas in Riyadh, and at least one household was damaged. No casualties were reported.
The multinational coalition said in a statement that six Houthi armed drones targeting “civilians and civilian installations” have also been intercepted and destroyed. Their targets include the southern cities of Khamis Mushait and Jizan.
On the 28th, Sarria warned residents of the target area to “keep away from all military airports and military locations.”
Continuing war and famine have plunged Yemen into a serious humanitarian crisis, and a large number of people have been displaced.
Agence France-Presse reported that a house near Hudaydah, a strategic port controlled by the Houthis, was bombed on February 28. Five civilians were killed, including a child.
