Not just one, but two Swiss are in the round of 16 at the Swiss Open. Stan Wawrinka defeated No. 6 seed Roberto Carballés Baeña 6-1, 3-1. Then the Spaniard gave up injured.
On his comeback after ten years, Stan Wawrinka started a performance demonstration. The opponent, after all number 60 in the world, did not give the slightest chance. Only after almost ten minutes did Carballés win a first rally with a service winner. With speed and precision, Wawrinka overwhelmed the (battered) opponent.
Wawrinka won the first set after just 21 minutes. The second set was a little less rapid, but the 38-year-old Wawrinka took the first service game from his opponent in this round as well.
“Stan the Man” was already in good form at Wimbledon – even after losing to Novak Djokovic. But how strong is Wawrinka in Gstaad really? Only the next few days will tell. Because Carballés Baeña was not good as a yardstick. Last week he lost to world No. 474 (Blaz Rola) on clay in Salzburg; in Gstaad he was plagued by neck problems even before the game against Wawrinka, for which he first sought treatment and finally gave up after 41 minutes.
On Thursday, Wawrinka meets the Spaniard Jaume Munar (ATP 110), who conquered Alexander Ritschard.
