The Geneva Open begins on Sunday. The Swiss tennis fans look to Geneva, because Roger Federer (39) competes. Another big name is missing: Stan Wawrinka (36). The French-speaking country, who won the tournament in 2016 and 2017, decided not to participate in the home country. Instead, he is staying in Monte Carlo and training hard.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how the 36-year-old’s season will continue. In March he underwent a small operation on his left foot. This had previously caused him problems. Back then, Wawrinka wrote on Instagram: “I’ll be out for a few weeks, but I can’t wait to start training again soon.”

Training on hard court instead of sand

He’s been training again for a long time now and lets his fans actively participate on social media. No matter if he hits balls over the net or works in the fitness room. He is also registered for the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, the French Open (May 30 to June 13). But the 2015 champion doesn’t appear to be preparing to compete in Paris. Because on his training pictures you can see that he is not training on sand, but on hard court. However, Wawrinka does not want to comment on this. He is also silent about his further season planning. And the Swiss tennis fans are wondering: what’s the matter with Stan?

Because his last months were not only due to the operation. He fell ill with Corona over Christmas. As he later said, the disease hit him hard. He was “out of order” for two weeks and had shown symptoms for a long time. At the Australian Open at the beginning of the year he then failed in the 2nd round at the then world number 55 Marton Fucsovics (29, Germany) and then only competed in two tournaments. But both in Doha (Kat) and Rotterdam (Ned) he lost his first game.

And in the world rankings, the former world number 3 is now only ranked 25th. Instead of returning with Geneva to the place where he celebrated his last tournament victory, Wawrinka is focusing on training. Only he himself knows where and when he will return to the tour. (red)
