– Stan Wawrinka hits hard against Frances Tiafoe
The Vaudois got rid of the American in straight sets. He will play the round of 16, this Thursday evening, at the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati.

Stan Wawrinka struck a blow on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, in the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati. Opposed to the American Frances Tiafoe (25 years old / ATP 10), the 38-year-old Vaudois, now 51st player in the world, won in two sets, 6-3 6-4, after a meeting which lasted 1h18′.
Wawrinka was imperial on his face-off. He only had to face three break points, and he managed to save two of them, misplacing his face-off only once. He converted 23 points on the first 24 serves he passed (96% success rate, an impressive figure!) and also showed efficiency behind his second serve (62%).
As he managed to grab Tiafoe’s serve three times, Wawrinka managed to close the deal in straight sets, winning 64 of 109 points played (59%). Thanks to this victory, he overtook Roger Federer by becoming the third oldest player in history to reach the round of 16 of a Masters 1000. “It is to live such moments that I continue to play”, s rejoiced “Stan the Man”.
The Vaudois will not have time to rest on his laurels. He will indeed face this Thursday evening (not before 9:30 p.m. Swiss time) the Australian Max Purcell (25 years old / ATP 70) in the round of 16 of the Ohio tournament. For a new show of force? Mistrust all the same: in the 16th round, Purcell, who went through the qualifications to obtain his place in the main draw, beat the Norwegian Casper Ruud, seeded No. 5 of the tournament, in three sets, 6-4 3 -6 6-4.
Novak Djokovic made a winning return to American soil on Wednesday, which he had not trodden for two years, by qualifying for the third round of the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, where he will face in an enticing duel the returning French Gael Monfils. “Nole”, who had not played in the United States since 2021, for lack of vaccination against Covid 19, dominated the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, forced to retire before the start of the second set, due to pain in the back.
