Stalker 2, developer, returns to NFT plan after players enact change

Shortly after announcing that they would introduce NFTs tied to Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl, developers of the next post-apocalyptic game said they were dropping the plan “after receiving feedback” from the public. “The interests of our fans and players are the team’s top priority,” said the company. The first person shooter game is being developed and published by GSC Game World and is scheduled for release in April 2022 on Microsoft Windows and Xbox Series X/S. GSC Game World has announced that it will lead the community to own a part of the game using blockchain technology.

The developer of Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl, a sequel to the 2009 cult hit Stalker: Call of Pripyat, announced on Wednesday that it would partner with the NFT platform DMarket on digital items. One of the NFTs they planned to offer would have allowed the owner to become a “metahuman”, which meant they would be turned into a non-player character (NPC) in the game.

The update came because many players didn’t support the idea and expressed their frustration by creating memes on Twitter and Reddit. Some fans even said they wouldn’t buy the Stalker 2. GSC immediately offered an explanation, but fans refused to buy it.

The backlash against the change may be in part because the company didn’t explain in detail why it wanted to release NFTs tied to the popular game in the first place. Also, there were environmental concerns, as the GSC did not name which blockchain it would use. Some blockchains use more energy than others, but most people can’t tell them apart.

However, the initial plan to create a “metahuman” involved giving NFT buyers names and nicknames for their characters in the game. These NPCs could have special roles such as “bartender, buddy or enemy”.

GSC Game World responded late Thursday afternoon with a defensive retort on every match that would be quickly withdrawn. “GSC Game World is an independent game development studio,” he began, “Like all other developers, we need two main resources: time and money.” Stalker 2 was originally announced in 2010 and was due to be released in 2012. But it hasn’t been able to release the game for one reason or another until now. It is now scheduled for an April 28, 2022 release.
