Stair run after pandemic break: Empire State Building is being climbed again

Flight of stairs after pandemic break
The Empire State Building is being climbed again

It is one of the most famous buildings in the world and the flight of stairs on its 1576 steps is a great spectacle with international participation every year. Until the corona pandemic forced a break last year. Now the flight of stairs in New York’s Empire State Building is to take place again.

The flight of stairs in New York’s Empire State Building, which had to be canceled in 2020 due to the corona pandemic, is to take place again this year. The event was planned for October 26, the organizers announced on Monday in New York.

However, this time, due to the ongoing effects of the pandemic, only 125 participants are likely to be drawn. In addition, a corona vaccination would have to be proven and hygiene and distance rules had to be observed.

Usually hundreds of people there

In 2019 the winner was Piotr Lobodzinski. He did it in 10 minutes and 5 seconds – here shortly after the finish line.

Actually, the 43rd edition of the flight of stairs, which usually involves hundreds of people, was planned for May 12, 2020. The year before, the Pole Piotr Lobodzinski had climbed the 1,576 steps of the famous skyscraper in Manhattan in 10 minutes and 5 seconds and won the race with it. Ralf Hascher from Ulm in Baden-Württemberg crossed the finish line as the eighth man with 12 minutes and 52 seconds. In the women’s category, Singapore’s Suzy Walsham had been tough to beat in recent years.

In contrast to such high-rise runs in China or the Middle East, there is no prize money in New York. The Australian Paul Crake set the record of 9 minutes and 33 seconds over the 86 floors in 2003. The men’s record is held by the German Thomas Dold, who was the fastest seven times between 2006 and 2012.

Recently 90th birthday celebration

On May 1st, the skyscraper – once the tallest in the world – celebrated its 90th birthday. “The Empire State Building, international icon and symbol of dreams, broke records 90 years ago and was a trendsetter,” said the head of the operating company Realty Trust, Anthony Malkin, on the occasion. “Today it is fully modernized for the 21st century.”

The tallest building in the world is now the 443 meter high Empire State Building with antenna. It lost its title to the former World Trade Center in 1972; today, around half a dozen towers are higher in New York alone. But the Empire State Building is still one of the most famous and popular skyscrapers in the city, and the operators even call it the “most famous building in the world”.
