The leaps in performance feel smaller these days because prices are stagnant. In the past, with a new release you got more performance for the same price as the old generation, so it felt like an improvement for a generation or two.
Because of COVID and the Mining craze, it increasingly looks like “10% more performance for 10% more money”, especially in the low-mid range. The 3060 (Ti) and 4060 (Ti) are a good example of this, both not a bit faster than their predecessors, but also more expensive. (I think the claims of better performance came from the DLSS / Frame generation only). Then the 7800XT, only about 3% faster than the more advanced 6800XT but the same MSRP, the only reason it seems like a better deal is because the 6800XT costs a fortune during COVID due to pricing absurd scalper.
The price range of €200-300 where most tickets were sold in the past is no longer interesting. AMD’s RX 6600 still offers a nice price/performance, but its successor (RX7600) was such a disappointment that I still often hear the advice to just buy the RX 6600. (That really seems like a running theme). I wouldn’t be surprised if the prices of the new cards were kept high on purpose so they can still sell all their old stock at a healthy margin.
