Stage goal at Dierkower Kreuz in Rostock reached

The Dierkower Kreuz is an important junction for local public transport in Rostock. Four tram and eight bus lines converge there and connect the northeast of the city with the center. In order to make the stop more attractive for passengers and to connect it even better to city traffic, Rostocker Straßenbahn AG (RSAG) and the city administration have implemented extensive modernizations as part of the Mirror model project. After around seven months of construction, the end of the first construction phase was celebrated on November 8th in the presence of Mayor Eva-Maria Kröger (left) and many other guests.

More comfort and better connections for passengers

New at Dierkower Kreuz, for example, are a bicycle facility that can be used on both sides with 90 parking spaces and 18 lockable bicycle boxes, which can be sent by email [email protected] or can be rented for a small fee by calling 0381/3816601.

The adjacent parking lot now also has parking spaces for e-scooters and bicycles, a bicycle repair kit and a mobile point for car sharing. “We want to improve the connection between public transport and other mobility offers,” says Stefan Wiedmer, managing director of the Warnow Transport Association (VVW).

Other changes include barrier-free platforms, improved lighting and the widening of the pedestrian and cycle path along Hinrichsdorfer Straße to three meters so that pedestrians and cyclists have safe access to the stops. The new shelters are to be covered in greenery by the end of November in order to provide waiting passengers with cooling on hot days and a protected habitat for insects.

Two and a half million euros for expanding mobility

In the second construction phase, the bus platforms will also have barrier-free access, better lighting and new shelters. The planning for this should be completed in February, and the implementation of the construction work is planned for 2026. In total, the planning and construction costs for the renovation work at Dierkower Kreuz amount to around two and a half million euros. Through the Mirror funding project, the federal government is contributing around 1.7 million euros and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is contributing around 175,000 euros.

In her inauguration speech, Mayor Eva-Maria Kröger described the renovation of the Dierkow Cross as an important milestone for the expansion of mobility in Rostock. “The construction work is necessary because we have to and want to maintain our traffic systems,” she emphasized. “We have to make ourselves more attractive and use every opportunity to upgrade public transport.”
