It will be one of the most challenging stages on this year’s Gire, not least because it will come after the first day off. After the start in Perugia, the riders will have a 162-kilometer journey to the destination town of Montalcino, but in the second half of the stage, up to 35 kilometers of unpaved dirt road is prepared for them in four sections, which will probably divide the favorites to the overall victory.

After a day off, the Giro d’Italia 2021 enters the second phase. The initial 40 kilometers will go at a high pace on a straight line. Subsequently, the terrain begins to undulate, which will take about another 50 kilometers.

However, everything essential from the 11th stage will take place on the final 70 kilometers. In addition to the fact that there are four sections of unpaved field road with a total length of 35.2 kilometers, the organizers also placed both sprint and two “three” mountain premiums.

The first unpaved section starts in Torrenieri and measures 9.1 kilometers. Subsequently, the cyclists return to the asphalt road, but soon get back to the rough surface. The second section of the four is the longest, measuring up to 13.5 kilometers. The journey continues with a relatively steep climb and after 5,000 meters the first sprint premium (Castiglion del Bosco) awaits the peloton. The unpaved section continues to rise up to Passo del Lumo Spento (13 km long; 3.6% slope), where the third category mountain premium is located.

After passing it, the riders return to the asphalt, where they complete the descent to the next dusty section. At the beginning, the organizers also placed the second sprint award (Castelnuovo dell’Abate). The third part of the specialty of the 11th stage measures 7.6 kilometers and is separated from the last 5-kilometer section by about 1,500 meters of asphalt road. This final section is the easiest, although it may not seem so to cyclists, as after 35 kilometers they will have their teeth full.

Shortly before the finish, the competitors will get to the next mountain bonus of the third category on the Passo del Lumo Spento (length 9.3 km; slope 4.6%). Only a four-kilometer descent leads to the finish line from the top.

Classicists or one of the adepts for the overall championship is expected to fight for the stage laurel this time.

Peter Sagan

After winning the tenth stage and the subsequent day off, Peter Sagan will not rush to attack. Its only priority will be a maximum of the first speed bonus. The main goal will be to guard the nearest opponents in the fight for the cyclamen jersey.

Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers)
Alberto Bettiol (EF Education – Nippo)
Giulio Ciccone (Trek – Segafredo)
