The first units appear on the route from the Danube valley to the Czech border.
Stadler Rail has won another major order in Austria and at the same time the largest contract for battery electric units (BEMUs) to date. It will supply up to 120 FLIRT Akku units to the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). They are to replace existing diesel sets and units on non-electrified lines.
The signing of the framework agreement was announced today by Stadler and ÖBB in a press release. ÖBB expects the first order to take place this autumn, specifically for sixteen units.
“If we want to meet our climate commitments, rail transport must be more sustainable. That’s why we decided to invest in alternative drives,” said Stadler boss Peter Spuhler.
The new units are to be driven mainly in the east of the country, the range of the unit on one charge will be around 100 kilometers. FLIRT Akku holds the world record for battery life. The units will operate under the name CityJet, which the carrier already uses for other units in regional transport.
The value of the framework contract is 1.3 billion euros. The first unit is scheduled to appear in operation in 2028 on the Kamptalbahn, i.e. the line connecting Křemži (Krems) and Sigmundsherberg in Lower Austria towards the Czech border.
Czech Railways is also currently selecting battery units. In the Netherlands, instead of purchasing this type of units, on the contrary, they decided to go the route of electrifying the tracks.
