Stade Rennes achieves a stunning victory in Lyon (2-3) with Martin Terrier scoring a double

In an almost stunning match, Stade Rennes won a precious victory in Lyon (2-3). Martin Terrier scored a double.

OL 2-3 Rennes

Goals: Henrique (57th) and Lacazette (78th) for OL // Terrier (22nd, 41st) and D. Doué (36th) for SRFC

We don’t know what Nemanja Matić said to himself, present in the stands at Groupama Stadium, when he saw Stade Rennais, his future former club, return to the locker room with a three-goal advantage at the break against OL, the one he must join in the coming hours. He perhaps thought he saw Les Gones come back in the second act, but it was ultimately Rennes who took the three points (2-3) to temporarily place themselves in the first part of the table. After a quarter of an hour of observation during which Maxence Caqueret unleashed strikes that were too soft to worry Steve Mandanda, the Rouge et Noir moved up a gear by giving Lyon a lesson in efficiency.

Doué-Terrier, fantastic duo

The Martin Terrier-Désiré Doué duo shone, enjoying a feverish Lyon defense. It was thus on a loss of ball from Rayan Cherki that the second was able to launch the first, whose powerful shot from the left surprised Anthony Lopes on his right (0-1, 22e). The two friends started again a few minutes later, the Rennes-trained midfielder still serving the attacker in the area, who rolled his attempt too far to make the break. This one arrived shortly after and this time it was Désiré Doué who took care of it by placing a merciless shot from 20 meters (0-2, 36e). We said to ourselves that the meeting had gone in the right direction for Rennes, while Benjamin Bourigeaud found Jake O’Brien on his way. The Breton vice-captain took charge of the corner straight away and Adrien Truffert appeared at the edge of the area, seeing his shot deflected into the back of the net by Terrier (0-3, 41st). Their first double in more than a year – it was already against Lyon – and the start of the whistles at Groupama Stadium, OL trying too timidly to put their heads right before the intermission.

The Rennes round back

The matter was over for many, perhaps not for Pierre Sage, who made a triple change after returning from the locker room to breathe life into his team. A decision that worked, especially since Rennes returned to the field by retreating and without managing to keep the ball. Ainsley Maitland-Niles ended up making the difference on the right to serve back Henrique, who had just entered and whose shot beat Mandanda (1-3, 63e). The Lyon highlight ended quickly and when everything seemed calmer for the Bretons, the Rennes defense acted up by missing in the area, Guela Doué and Jeanuël Belocian in particular, to let Alexandre Lacazette slip the leather between the legs of Mandanda in a closed corner (2-3, 78e). Panic on board? A little, but not too much either, because OL failed to push and create dangerous chances, seeing at the same time Bertug Yildirim or Baptiste Santamaria scratch precious minutes until a victory which arrived and which allows Rennes to confirm its improvement.
