The US government has previously punished the leadership of the Chinese city of Hong Kong and other top Chinese figures with the sanctions after a strict security law was introduced by the communist regime in Beijing. The relative autonomy of the former British Crown Colony, which has been a special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China since 1997, is being lost by that law, according to critics.
