Stacey Cunningham and Adena Friedman are the fearless women of Wall Street

Dhe neo-classical building of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is a symbol of the US metropolis and capitalism. Three years ago it took on an additional symbolic character when a bronze statue was installed on its forecourt. It is the “Fearless Girl”, the “fearless girl” who stares at the temple-like facade of the stock exchange with a determined look and a challenging posture. It is intended to send a message to the corporate world to recruit more women for management positions. This appeal arrived inside the building before the sculpture was even in front of the door.

Because a few months earlier, Stacey Cunningham was appointed to the top post of the stock exchange as president. After 66 men since its founding in 1792, the NYSE got a female boss for the first time. And the now 47-year-old Cunningham is not the only woman in town who runs one of the most important stock exchanges in the world. Nasdaq, located further north in Times Square and on which stocks of heavyweights such as Apple, Microsoft and Tesla are traded, has Adena Friedman, five years older, as its CEO. Cunningham and Friedman once started their exchanges as interns, and both took detours in their careers before making it to the top. In their current posts they are bitter rivals. They also have very different ideas about how best to open doors to women outside of their own businesses.
