“Stabilization in Number of University Applications: Economics and Law Studies Remain Popular”

During the pandemic, there were historically many people who applied for a place in higher education. This year, the number has stabilized somewhat, and there are now 135,980 applicants who have applied for admission to universities and colleges through Samordna admissions.

At the top is the civil economics education at the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) for the fourth year in a row. Principal Øystein Thøgersen is very pleased with that.

– It is a narrow eye of the needle, and those who get a place are very strong candidates. We offer rock-solid and professionally up-to-date education for the working life of the future. We are particularly committed to combining topics such as technology, data analysis and sustainability with the traditional economics and management subjects. With a degree from NHH, they get a job in most industries and a sought-after competence, he says in a press release.

Law studies in Oslo and Bergen follow in second and third place.

Exemption from law school

Studies dealing with law are still popular. This year, 7.4 per cent of all applicants chose such studies as their first choice.

If you have previously wanted to study law, only Oslo, Bergen and Tromsø have offered this.

But this year, for the first time, the study is “exempt” and both Agder, Stavanger and BI offer this in the autumn. This is reflected in the applicant numbers.

The University of Agder has previously offered a bachelor’s degree in jurisprudence, but this year they are also offering a master’s degree for the first time. Together, it constitutes a full-fledged legal education.

– Here we see an increase in the number of first priority applicants of almost fifty percent. Overall, we see that the opportunity to offer a full law education leads to a strengthening of both the professional environment and the interest in studying with us, says the dean of the School of Business at UiA, Roger Norman in a press release.

UiA is experiencing an increase of approximately 50 per cent in the number of first-time applicants. At BI, there are 1,645 applicants for 150 places for the bachelor’s degree in jurisprudence.

– The interest in the new study in jurisprudence is absolutely fantastic. We have undoubtedly hit a nerve in the market. The launch of jurisprudence is a big step for BI, but at the same time the result of long-term and painstaking work, says the rector of BI School of Economics, Karen Spens in a press release last week.

Economics studies are popular

The educational area “economic-administrative subjects” is the second most popular educational area among first-choice applicants after “health subjects”, according to the figures from Samordna admissions.

Approximately 23,700 applicants have chosen studies within economics.

“Digital economy and management” at Høgskulen på Vestlandet (HVL) stands out in particular when it comes to an increase in the number of interested parties. The annual course, which offers a deepening in digital marketing and management, has seen an increase of 575 per cent from the previous year in the number of applicants. There are now 270 applicants spread over 30 places.

Increased interest in petroleum and online studies

More and more educational players offer studies where all or part of the education takes place online. This year there are 96 such online studies, compared to 84 last year. Since 2016, there has been an increase in the number of online studies of 273 per cent.

In today’s number of applications at the University of Stavanger, you can also see that there is increased interest in energy and petroleum technology.

– It is gratifying that the number of applicants is increasing, and we hope it continues like this. We know that there is a great demand in the business world for the competence this education provides, and it is relevant for the entire energy industry, says senior advisor Susanna King at UiS in a press release.

With them, applicants for the bachelor’s degree in energy and petroleum technology have increased by 71 per cent compared to last year.

Dramatic decline in teacher education

Just under half of all applicants have teaching or health studies as their first choice. Nevertheless, there is a decline in the number of people applying for teacher training, as this has fallen by 21.9 per cent compared to last year.

– It is very worrying that we have a sharp decline in applicants for teacher training courses. This is primarily a national problem, but it also affects NTNU to a large extent. There is a lower number of applicants for study programs both within lecturer training and primary school teacher training. We still have many qualified applicants, but unfortunately it does not look like we have qualified applicants to fill the places on all the programmes, says vice-chancellor for education Marit Reitan at NTNU in a press release.
