Stabbing incident with three deaths in Germany: Perpetrator was known to the police and was treated psychologically Abroad

The 24-year-old man who killed three people and injured five others on Friday evening in the center of Würzburg, Germany, had been violent before and therefore known to the police. The Somali, who has lived in Germany since 2015, has recently received psychiatric treatment. This is what the Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Hermann (CSU) said.

The motive of the knife puller is not yet known. The state minister speaks of a possible mental disorder, but does not rule out an Islamist background. According to him, an eyewitness stated that the perpetrator shouted “Allahu Akbar” when he stabbed people at random. The twenty-something had been undergoing psychiatric treatment for about two weeks and would also have been forcibly admitted.

According to Der Spiegel, the twenty-something is called Jibril A. and he has attracted the attention of the police several times in recent months, but not because of political crimes. The Somali, a rejected asylum seeker, was registered in a homeless shelter in the city.

A. entered a branch of department store chain Woolworth around 5 p.m., allegedly grabbed a knife from one of the shelves and thereby attacking customers. Then he fled into the street and stabbed people again. Videos on social media show him walking through the streets barefoot and dressed in jeans and a light-colored sweater, holding a large knife. Civilians try to take him out, throw objects at him and chase him.

Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) later thanked them on Twitter. “Many thanks and respect for the controlled intervention of many citizens who resolutely resisted the alleged attacker,” he wrote.

The brave citizens also showed the police in the shopping area the way to the knife puller. He was quickly knocked out with a shot to his thigh. After the man’s arrest, his whereabouts were searched. The federal prosecutor’s office dealing with the fight against terrorism has not yet taken on the investigation.

The five injured are all seriously injured and two are in life-threatening condition, according to police. According to the state minister, the victims are mainly women “of very different ages”, but a small boy was also injured.

Afghan asylum seeker

Less than five years ago, Würzburg was also the scene of an apparently random attack with four seriously injured, two of whom were in mortal danger. On July 18, 2016, an Afghan refugee attacked travelers on a regional train with a knife and an axe. He then fled and attacked a hiker. The police eventually shot 17-year-old Reza A. dead. He was a so-called unaccompanied minor asylum seeker (ama). Terror group IS claimed the attacks, making the drama the first terrorist attack by IS in Germany.
