Stabbing at Martin Van Buren High School in Queens NYC: 17-Year-Old Students Injured, Suspect in Custody

Two 17-year-old students were stabbed at a high school in Queens (NYC) yesterday afternoon, leading to the temporary closure of the campus.

The attack occurred on the stairs of the high school “Martin Van Buren” and Hillside Avenue around 1:15 p.m. Thursday, according to CBS News. A teenager has been charged and two other persons of interest were taken into custody after the attack. A knife was recovered at the scene.

One student was stabbed in the stomach and shoulder and the other in the shoulder only. Both were taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in stable condition, reported ABC News.

According to the NYPD, a 17-year-old boy was charged with criminal possession of a weapon. The names of none of those involved were not revealed and the motive for the attack is not known.

The high school was locked down for an hour after the incident and the Department of Education (DOE) issued the following statement: “The safety and well-being of our students is our absolute top priority. The NYPD responded immediately to an incident at school. The students were placed on a brief lockdown and have now been released. “We will provide additional emotional support to any student who needs it.”

This was one of at least 12 stabbings in New York City schools since summeraccording to the NYPD, up from seven the previous year.

According to data from the NYPD and the organization Chalkbeat, More than 1,600 knives were found in New York City schools in the 2018-19 school year. But last year that number jumped to more than 2,800.

In December in NYC there was three students stabbed in 24 hours in fights inside their schools early in the morning, including one female victim. In October A 13-year-old boy was stabbed to death by a 14-year-old boy after leaving school aboard a MTA public bus in Staten Island.

Similar situations have also occurred in other areas of New York state. In December, a 13-year-old boy was stabbed multiple times by another student of the same age at a middle school in Middletown, Orange County, at the beginning of the day.

Young people are protagonists in armed violence in New York as victims and perpetratorsparticularly shootings and knife attacks, in and around schools.

This school year, through Dec. 6, police and security officers seized 1,088 knives and 260 box cutters in NYC, surpassing the 1,004 and 252 respectively seized during the same period last year, according to data from the NYPD School Safety Division.

The seizure of knives and other knives has increased 7% this school year in NYC and could be more because the number of metal detectors and security agents has decreased.

In NYC only 79 of 1,500 school buildings have permanent metal detectors. There are also seven roving scanners on wheels, according to the last count known to the school safety officers union. In 2018 there were 93 school scanners. At the same time, the roster of school safety officers has plummeted from about 5,200 in 2020 to about 3,700 now.
