Dresden (AP) – The Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden is placing a focus on the works of Ludwig van Beethoven and Dmitri Shostakovich in the new season. In addition, the last works by various composers play a major role. Together with chief conductor Christian Thielemann, the orchestra will conclude its cycle of all Beethoven symphonies, which began two years ago, announced the Staatskapelle in Dresden on Wednesday. “Looking back, it is almost a small miracle for me that despite all the cancellations and changes to the schedule, we managed to get our Beethoven cycle through the pandemic as planned,” emphasized Thielemann.
The argument with Shostakovich runs through the entire season. With the “Leningrad Symphony” Tugan Sochijew makes his debut at the conductor of the Staatskapelle in December. For the 7th symphony concert, Vladimir Jurowski selected the master’s 15th and final symphony. At the start of the International Shostakovich Days in Gohrisch, the 1st and 9th symphonies will be performed in summer 2022 under the direction of Omer Meir Wellber. The season opener at the end of August will also be dominated by Shostakovich: The Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra – a partner of the Staatskapelle since 2012 – will perform with Manfred Honeck and the 10th Symphony.
The first guest conductor Myung-Whun Chung can be seen in concerts as well as honorary conductor Herbert Blomstedt. The French violist Antoine Tamestit is a guest at several concerts as “Capell virtuoso”, and Matthias Pintscher as “Capell composer”.
After the tour business came to a standstill due to the corona pandemic, performances in European music centers such as Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, Budapest and Zurich are planned for the coming season.
