Staatsbosbeheer: ‘Possible bird flu in Oostvaardersplassen’

Staatsbosbeheer takes into account that there is bird flu in the Oostvaardersplassen. According to forest ranger Hans-Erik Kuypers, a number of dead water birds have been found in the Oostvaardersplassen. The cause of death is not clear.

The birds are currently being examined in Lelystad, reports Broadcasting Flevoland. In addition to the dead animals, it is also noticeable that several geese show different behaviour. Normally geese stay in large groups, but now you can also see loners, who don’t take flight when one of the forest rangers approaches them. According to Kuypers, this points to weakening and a possible infection with bird flu.

Warning for visitors

So far, the dead birds have only been found in an area off-limits to visitors. Still, Staatsbosbeheer warns visitors to stay away from animals and to leave dead or weakened animals.

The ranger advises dog owners to keep their animals on a lead. Dogs can become seriously ill if they come into contact with animals that have bird flu.
