Animal rights organization Animal Rights is against the slaughter of the horses and wild transportation of the animals. The organization therefore asked Monday to prohibit the application for the necessary passports. Only an owner or holder of horses can apply for such a passport and according to Animal Rights Forestry Commission does not own wild large grazers.
The preliminary relief judge rejected the request. According to the judge, the area manager has the power to dispose of the horses as soon as they are in the catching pasture, because the service also takes care of the animals. That is why Staatsbosbeheer is allowed to apply for passports and subsequently transport animals. The transport of the horses had been halted pending the judge’s decision. Staatsbosbeheer announced on Thursday that it will now continue transporting the horses to the slaughterhouse as soon as possible.
240 horses
Staatsbosbeheer wants to remove a total of 240 horses from the Flevoland nature reserve. There are now too many red deer, heck cattle and konik horses in the Oostvaardersplassen. It is still uncertain whether all horses will go to the slaughterhouse, because the meat of the first 32 horses that have already been slaughtered is examined for the presence of harmful substances. In a number of places in the Netherlands, free-roaming grazers have recently shown that they have ingested heavy metals and dioxins from the soil via the grass. If that is also the case with animals from the Oostvaardersplassen, the meat will not be marketed and the animals will be sent to a rendering plant.
