After 10 months of work, a new sound system has been installed in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, replacing an old system installed for the 2000 Jubilee.
(Vatican News Network) In order to improve services for pilgrims, the sound system of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican has been replaced with a new one, replacing the analog sound system installed nearly 25 years ago for the 2000 Jubilee. After 10 months of engineering, the new digital sound system was tested on the evening of July 21 and officially used in the mass presided over by Pope Francis on the 23rd.
Carlo Carbone, an engineer on the project team, explained to SciNews that the new sound system “allows people to participate more naturally in the liturgical celebration”. The aural effect is perfect and accurate, without the reverberation of a large closed room. “The sound always sounded from the altar, which was considered as the central point of origin,” the architects noted.
During the 10-month project, technicians from the technical department of the Holy See’s Ministry of Communication, the technical office of St. Peter’s Engineering Agency and Bose Professional cooperated with each other. Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Rector of St. Peter’s Basilica, praised this “significant team work, beautiful synergy”. The work will be carried out mainly during the night hours after St. Peter’s Basilica is closed.
