St. Moritz Super-G: Shiffrin stellar in front of Curtoni. Goggia fifth

Mikaela climbs to 77 Cup victories, -5 from Vonn. After Friday’s success Elena stops at 12/100. Brignone eleventh, outside Bassino

Another victory for Mikaela Shiffrin, another wonderful blue podium: Elena Curtoni is second. The super-G in St. Moritz also gives Sofia Goggia a special day, fifth at the end of a race far from the limit after yesterday’s incredible triumph.
Shiffrin penned the big corners on Corviglia in 1’13″62, the fastest for success number 77 in the World Cup which brings her even closer to Lidsey Vonn (82) and to the absolute record set by Ingemar Stenmark (86).

But a whisker away (12/100), after the success in the first descent on Friday is Elena Curtoni, who has paid for the delay accumulated in the first part of the track. “I got off to a good start – Elena commented -. A season that started on the right foot that gives confidence. I felt fit, I’m happy to be able to do what I want on the track. I won’t be in Semmering, I’ll do Christmas at home and focus mainly on speed. I think I can play for good results and placings in all races, so obviously the head is there. I’m aware of what I’m worth: I try to put all of this on track every day.” On the podium also the French Miradoli (at 40/100), third ahead of Michelle Gisin (at 57/100) and Sofia Goggia (fifth at 60/100).

The race

Second in the last two super-Gs held, Shiffrin had won the last race in the specialty on January 26, 2020 in Bansko. With today’s success, the American extends her lead in the general standings: 575 points against Goggia’s 470. But Sofia was once again the protagonist of a courageous race today, after a night complicated by pain in her left hand operated on two days ago for a double fracture. “It was a pretty crazy weekend – said Sofia – . Downhill a second place in very bad conditions and a good victory. Today, regardless of how it ends, it can be said that the race was played intelligently. I didn’t feel like pulling, I wanted to stay solid on my feet and I succeeded. Tonight I woke up with my hand throbbing and I was undecided whether to run or not, it wasn’t easy. I made some mistakes and some uncertainty, but today it’s okay. Now rehabilitation of my hand awaits me and then we will prepare St. Anton and Cortina in the best possible way, also in view of the World Cup”. Eleventh (at 1″25) is Federica Brignone, while Marta Bassino went out while she was in line with the times to get on the podium.

The Women’s World Cup stops for the Christmas break and will be back on track from 27 to 29 December with two giant slalom and one in Semmering (Aut).
