/ world today news/ Every year on May 6, we honor the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious (275-281 – April 23, 303). He is one of the most revered saints, a martyr for Christ’s faith in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
During the time of Emperor Diocletian, he was a soldier in the Roman Empire. Immortalized in the myth of Saint George and the llama, he is the patron saint of England, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Ethiopia, Canada, Catalonia, Lithuania, Portugal, Serbia, Montenegro and the cities of Beirut, Genoa, Istanbul, Ljubljana, Moscow and Freiburg.
On the icons of St. George the Victorious is always depicted on horseback, and at his feet lies the llama he killed. The Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on April 23. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the people celebrate it on May 6 and it is an official state holiday.
May 6 in Bulgaria is also the Day of Courage and a holiday of the Bulgarian Army. He began to be celebrated in the Bulgarian Army since its creation. By Decree No. 1 of January 1, 1880. Prince Alexander Battenberg established the military order “For bravery” – a distinction that honors feats performed on the battlefield. And with Decree No. 5 of January 9 of the same year, the celebration of the holiday was decreed. During the wars in the period 1912-1918, although in combat conditions, the holiday was celebrated. It is celebrated every year with a memorial service for the dead and a prayer service for the living. The military units are reviewed by the Supreme Commander of the Bulgarian Army and Grand Master of the Order “For Bravery”. The celebration ends with a military parade. Until the signing of the Nyoi Treaty, the Day of Battle Glory was celebrated separately on November 27 (the victory of the Bulgarian Army in the Battle of Slivnitsa in the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885).
In the 1920s, this holiday was combined with the celebration of Courage Day on May 6. Since 1931 The Day of Courage and Victories has been declared a military holiday. For the first time during the celebration of Saint George’s Day in 1937. the celebration begins the night before at dawn, until then it is an episodic phenomenon. After 1946 the tradition of celebrating the holiday of the Bulgarian Army has been interrupted. The date was initially set to September 9, and after 1953 – September 23, which remained until the democratic changes in our country in 1989. The Grand National Assembly designated August 23 as a military holiday – the day of the decisive battles at Shipka. Two years, 1991. and 1992, Bulgarian soldiers celebrate this memorable day as their holiday. In 1993 by Decree of the Military Council No. 15 of January 27, May 6 was declared the Day of Courage and a holiday of the Bulgarian Army.
