St. Brown against St. Brown: brotherly duel with clear favorites

Amon-Ra St. Brown is the little brother – but in a much better position before the duel with Equanimeous, who is three years older. The Detroit Lions are currently among the NFL elite. Like St. Brown.

Amon-Ra St. Brown really has the upper hand – and lets his older brother Equanimeous St. Brown feel it before the family duel in the NFL.

“We don’t take anyone lightly, especially not a rival from our division who will probably get their quarterback back,” said the 24-year-old football professional before his Detroit Lions’ home game on Sunday (7 p.m./RTL) against the Chicago Bears. But in the weekly video podcast with his brother, his self-confidence after such a strong season so far is obvious. “It’s 3-1 against you. That’s just fun to say.”

Clear favorite role

In fact, the youngest of three brothers – Osiris, the middle one, ended his football career after college – only lost the first of four games against his brother. But he has never been as clear as now as the favorite: with seven wins in ten games, the Lions are currently one of the best teams in the NFL, while the Bears have only won three games in the same period.

And while Equanimeous’ role in Chicago is significantly smaller due to a week-long injury break and he hardly ever gets a ball thrown to him, Amon-Ra is one of the most important professionals in Detroit and quarterback Jared Goff’s favorite passing station.

Big coaching praise for Amon-Ra St. Brown

“He’s the most consistent, reliable guy you can find in this league,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said of Amon-Ra St. Brown after his outstanding performance in Sunday’s 41:38 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. “He does what he’s supposed to and then sometimes ten times as much. The bigger the moment, the more he’s there.”

The son of a German mother and an American father, who grew up in Orange County, south of LA, set a career high in the game with caught passes for 156 yards and scored a touchdown. For the fourth time in a row, St. Brown achieved at least 100 yards after passes; he has already achieved this six times this season – no professional football player in the league has achieved more.

If he catches at least six passes again on Sunday against the Bears, St. Brown will move into second place among players with the most such catches in their first three seasons. He would Odell Beckham Jr. and leave Michael Thomas behind, only Justin Jefferson from the Minnesota Vikings has more. He has 32, St. Brown is currently at 27. “He does everything well. He’s a complete receiver,” said his brother Equanimeous appreciatively in an interview with the German Press Agency.

Equanimeous’ career at a crossroads

For the eldest of the three brothers, the duel in Detroit is extremely important for his own career. He has only had a pass thrown to him in three games this season, his role in Chicago does not justify a new contract for the coming season – and his current one is expiring.

However, he has no doubt that he will continue in the NFL after four years with the Green Bay Packers and now two with the Bears. “I know how good I am and even though I’ve been here for six years, I’m still only 27. I’m not that old, so I can still play for a long time,” he emphasized. “I’m better now. You can’t stay in this league if you don’t get better, you just get older.”

Despite the apparently clearly assigned roles, Equanimeous St. Brown also goes into the first of two brother duels within three weeks with healthy self-confidence. The Lions will play in Chicago on December 10th. “It won’t be easy, but we will have a good plan,” he said. “I think we’ll win. I know they’re very good, but I can’t let my brother win all the time.”
