SSG Landers’ Second Team Coach Park Jeong-tae Resigns Amid Drunk Driving Controversy
In a surprising turn of events, SSG Landers Futures (second team) coach Park Jeong-tae has voluntarily resigned following public backlash over his history of drunk driving. The decision comes just weeks after his appointment, highlighting the ongoing scrutiny surrounding his past actions and their implications for the KBO League.
Park Jeong-tae, who was appointed on the 31st of last month, faced immediate criticism due to his multiple drunk driving convictions. In a statement released on the 24th, he acknowledged the concerns raised by fans and baseball officials, stating, “After being appointed, I heard voices of concern from fans and baseball officials. I thought there were still some shortcomings before I could return to the field, and I do not want to cause concern to the fans and the club.” He further expressed his intention to step down, adding, “I will take a low-key attitude and think about the role I can play in the development of the KBO League.”
A troubled Past
Park’s resignation stems from a series of drunk driving incidents that have marred his reputation. In 2019, he was booked without detention for violating the Aggravated Punishment Act for Specific Crimes (driver assault) and the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving). He was subsequently sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison and 3 years probation. During the trial,it was revealed that he had two prior drunk driving convictions, one of which occurred while he was an active coach.
Under current KBO regulations, individuals caught drunk driving three or more times face permanent disqualification. However, all three of Park’s offenses occurred before the regulations were strengthened in September 2018. Additionally, at the time of his last arrest in 2019, he was not a member of the KBO, creating a legal gray area regarding retroactive disciplinary action.
Controversy Over Nepotism
The appointment also sparked allegations of nepotism, as Park Jeong-tae is the uncle of Choo Shin-soo, who was recently appointed as assistant to the club owner and general manager of training. Critics argued that the hiring was influenced by familial ties, further complicating the situation.
SSG’s Response
The SSG club accepted Park’s resignation after internal deliberations, stating, “We would like to apologize to the fans regarding the appointment of the second team manager, and in the future, the club will make every effort to appoint a manager that suits the expectations of the KBO League and fans.” The club has announced plans to expedite the process of appointing a new second-team manager.
