A court statement came out that Lee Jae-myeong, the Democratic Party leader, and former Ssangbangul chairman Kim Seong-tae had a close relationship.
Ssangbang-ul, former chief of staff, Mr. A, appeared as a witness at the trial of former Vice Governor Lee Hwa-young of Gyeonggi Province on charges of bribery and violation of the Political Funds Act under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, which was held on the 17th at the hearing of the 11th Criminal Division of the Suwon District Court (Presiding Judge Jin-woo Shin).
Mr. A, who served as the chief secretary to the chairman of the Ssangbangwool Group, is known as the closest aide to former chairman Kim Seong-tae. In 2020, he also served as the CEO of Ssangbangwool Group affiliates. He was in charge of drafting business proposals when Ssangbangwool promoted its North Korea aid project.
Prosecutors presented Mr. A’s prosecution statement and said, “The witness answered ‘yes’ to the question of whether it was true that Chairman Kim Seong-tae, Vice Chairman Bang Yong-cheol, Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myeong, and Gyeonggi-do Vice Governor Lee Hwa-yeong had a close relationship. I asked, and Mr. A replied “yes”.
Then, “(In the prosecutor’s investigation), I also asked, ‘Did you think these people were close when you served as chief secretary? When I checked, “Is it correct?”, Mr. A replied, “Yes.” At the time of the prosecution’s investigation, Mr. A admitted all the contents of the record containing his statement.
However, former Chairman Kim and CEO Lee are in the position that they do not know each other. On the 13th, CEO Lee said through a live broadcast on YouTube, “I have never seen the face of a person named Kim Seong-tae.” Former Chairman Kim also denied any relationship with CEO Lee after arriving at Incheon Airport on the morning of the same day after escaping overseas for eight months.
