Sri Lankan President Escapes, Parliament Has Not Received Resignation Letter

KOLOMBO, KOMPAS.com – Sri Lanka’s parliament speaker has yet to receive Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation letter.

The information was conveyed by two sources who knew about the matter to Mr Reuters.

Rajapaksa fled the country on Wednesday (13/7/2022) morning local time to the Maldives.

A source who knew of the problem told Reuters that Rajapaksa will send his resignation letter as soon as possible.

“Today (Wednesday) he will send it (the resignation letter),” said the source, as reported by Reuters.

Reported Kompas.com Previously, Rajapaksa fled his country on a military plane.

Rajapaksa vowed at the weekend to step down on Wednesday and pave the way for a peaceful transition of power.

Reported from AFPRajapaksa fled with his wife and a bodyguard on the military plane Antonov-32.

The plane took off from the main international airport bound for the Maldives, according to immigration sources.

“Their passports are stamped and they board a special air force plane,” an immigration official involved in the process told AFP.

Previously, the 73-year-old leader who was once known as “The Terminator” had difficulty leaving his country for more than 24 hours.
