Colombo
The Nationalist Janashakti Front (NPP), the leftist coalition that won a historic victory, will name a new prime minister and cabinet ministers and form a cabinet on Monday. NPP spokesperson Tilwin Silva said the number of cabinet ministers will be reduced to less than 25 as part of controlling administrative costs. According to the Sri Lankan Constitution, the number of Cabinet Ministers shall be less than thirty and the number of Ministers of State shall not exceed forty. Silva said that the aim is to create an efficient administrative system by avoiding unnecessary costs.
The NPP controlled the Sri Lankan Parliament with a two-thirds majority. This is the first time in Sri Lanka’s electoral history that any party or coalition has won a two-thirds majority. The NPP alliance won 61.56 percent of the total votes polled. The record so far is 60.33 percent of the votes won by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s party in 2010.
In the 2020 parliamentary elections, the Rajapakse-led People’s Freedom Alliance won 145 seats. On that day NPP got only three seats. Communist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake was elected President of Sri Lanka in the elections held last September. Dissanayake, who came to power on September 23, dissolved Parliament a day later and set the stage for a mandate.
