Srettha Thavisin Elected as Thailand’s New Prime Minister to End Political Stalemate

Bangkok

Srettha Thavisin elected as the new Prime Minister (PM). Thailand after securing the necessary parliamentary support. The election of Srettha ended the political stalemate for the last three months after the election was won by Partai Move Forward who are now excluded from the governing coalition.

As reported AFP and ReutersTuesday (22/8/2033), Srettha managed to get the support of more than 375 members of parliament and senators needed to be elected PM of Thailand in a joint vote which was held again for the umpteenth time on Tuesday (22/8) local time.

Full support from Thailand’s parliament and senate is required, according to Thai law, to become a PM and form a government.

Pita Limjaroenrat who led the Move Forward party which won Thailand’s election on May 14, failed to secure enough parliamentary and senate support to become Thailand’s prime minister in a vote held last month.

A share ownership scandal in a media company has disqualified Pita from being a member of parliament and can no longer be nominated as PM of Thailand.

The Pheu Thai party, which ranked second in the election, then submitted Srettha as a candidate for PM to parliament. The figure of Srettha who is known as a real estate mogul in Thailand, plunged into politics just a few months before the elections were held on May 14.

When proposing Srettha as a PM candidate, Pheu Thai, who previously supported and joined the Move Forward Party coalition which eventually collapsed, decided to expel the party that won the election from the coalition.
