SRE: Follow-up is being given to the case of Renán Solís, a Mexican imprisoned in India

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) stated that through the Mexican Embassy in India, it has been following the case of compatriot Jorge Renán Solís Fernández, since his arrest on September 25, 2018 in that country, where he has suffered kidnapping, torture and threats, in addition to being sentenced to more than 20 years in prison.

“As part of the consular assistance and protection provided, more than 20 verbal notes have been sent to the Ministry of External Affairs of India to request various actions on behalf of Mr. Solís Fernández, including the request for a thorough and in-depth review of the case from its inception, with the purpose of establishing whether there were violations of rights or of the legal process, and to act accordingly,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Diplomatic personnel have also made six face-to-face visits to Mr. Solís Fernández and have attended the hearings at the Court. “The Mexican Embassy in India is still waiting to receive the corresponding authorization to attend the next hearing scheduled for August 30,” he added.

Throughout the legal process, the SRE explained, “there has been constant communication with the compatriot, his family and lawyers, addressing their various requests. In this regard, on May 30, personnel from the General Directorate of Consular Protection and Strategic Planning and the General Directorate of Asia-Pacific met with Mr. Solís Fernández’s family to discuss his situation and possible legal actions.”

The SER emphasized that, through the Mexican Embassy in India and the offices involved, it “will continue to provide consular support and protection to Mr. Jorge Renán Solís Fernández and his family, to ensure that they have access to the defense mechanisms available to guarantee due process and respect for their human rights.”
