The Serbian football club TSC Bačka Topola, which currently ranks 2nd in the Super League with only a two-point loss to leader Partizan Belgrade, opened one of the most modern stadiums in the country last week.

The stand boasts LED lighting, poles with spotlights, a heated lawn, an electronic irrigation system and photovoltaic panels covering the roof of the grandstands, which are connected to the future hotel.

The only downside is that the stadium does not meet the UEFA Category 4 criteria. The reason is capacity. Instead of the required 8,000, it offers only 4,100 seats. The reason is probably the fact that the town of Bačka Topola has only 15,000 inhabitants.

Construction of the stadium began in 2019 and was to be completed in the autumn of 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic caused a very large time lag. The total budget is unknown, but reportedly exceeded 10 million euros.

TSC Bačka Topola is not even a completely Serbian club. The largest Hungarian community in the country lives in Bačka Topol. And it was for her that the stadium was built. Hungarian resources contribute to a large extent to the financing of the club and the construction of the stadium.

Creating strong football teams with modern stadiums in the surrounding countries is part of the strategy of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The aim is for local Hungarian communities to form a strong bond with their homeland and gain a sense of pride in being Hungarians, even though they live in another country.

In addition to Bačka Topola, the “project” also includes FC DAC 1904 Dunajská Streda, Croatian NK Osijek or Romanian Sepsi.
