SR.de: Which corona measures do researchers recommend?

On Friday, the Saarland health authorities reported 204 new corona cases, after the previous day with 277 cases, a new high since the beginning of February. The seven-day incidence climbed to 103.7 new cases per 100,000 population within seven days.

If the 100 limit is exceeded on three days in a row, the “Saarland model” provides for an extension of the test requirement. In addition, new measures are being discussed nationwide that could also affect the Saarland model.

Rissland: The incidence of 100 will probably be exceeded over the long term

Dr. Jürgen Rissland: “It’s still a tense situation”

The Homburg virologist Jürgen Rissland expects that the incidence “will lastingly exceed 100 in the coming week”.

Against this background, he sees the Saarland model quite critically. In principle, it is a “good idea to have an opening plan” – but implementing it right now in the phase with increasing numbers could send the wrong signal. “It’s still a tense situation, you shouldn’t forget that,” said Rissland.

Night curfew researchers

The Saarbrücken professor for clinical pharmacy, Thorsten Lehr, advocates acting quickly now. A hard lockdown is the only way, he said in an online interview with ZDF. “If I could decide, I would take the maximum possible measures now. That would also include a curfew to simply pull out all the stops and lower the infections and then hope that they can be reduced,” said Lehr.

From the point of view of researchers at the TU Berlin around Prof. Kai Nagel, the greatest possible effect on the infection rate would be a contact block as completely as possible, as implemented in Great Britain and Portugal, for example. you recommend in their latest report from April 9th appropriate measures or at least a night curfew.

In addition, there should be quick tests at least once a week, both in schools and at work.

Barely any effect from renewed business closure

A renewed closure of the retail trade, which is “already shielded by masks, rapid tests and a reduced density of people,” would, however, no longer have a measurable effect in the simulations, according to the report.

More activities outside when the weather is nice

On the other hand, the weather could have a noticeable effect – especially if leisure activities were increasingly relocated outside at higher temperatures. The warm days at the end of March had a corresponding effect in the simulation model, according to the Berlin researchers in their report. The weather forecasts for the coming days, however, indicated that the weather would be cooler, which is why it was imperative that further measures be taken as soon as necessary.

The Bonn virologist Professor Hendrik Streeck also expects the weather to have an effect, but speaks of the coming months and not the next days or weeks in the video talk “19 – the chief visit”.

Streeck considers curfew to be counterproductive

Unlike the Berlin researchers and Professor Lehr, he considers a night curfew to be the wrong way to go. He fears that virus transmissions, which mainly take place indoors, could increase even more as a result.

Streeck points out that recently, increasingly socially weaker people have been affected by infections, for example people who already lived in cramped living conditions. “If you don’t give people the opportunity to create valves to go out, then we will continue to encourage the infection process, especially in the socially disadvantaged areas,” said Streeck.

However, the virologist also emphasized that it was a thesis that could not currently be substantiated. Nevertheless, he advocated creating corona-compliant meeting places – such as well-ventilated gyms where people could come together under supervision. Outdoor catering is also something that does not contribute much to the infection process at all – but is a possible outlet for people.
