O Yeong-Su, the talented actor who gained popularity through his remarkable performance in Netflix’s hit series Squid Game, has been found guilty of sexual misconduct. The renowned actor was accused of hugging and kissing a woman on the cheek against her wishes.
Sentencing and Denial of Charges
The Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Court in Korea has handed O Yeong-Su a suspended prison sentence of up to eight months, to be served within a two-year probationary period. The charges against him stem from incidents that allegedly occurred in 2017, according to the Korean news agency Yonhap. O Yeong-Su firmly denies these accusations and plans to appeal the ruling. As part of his sentence, he will also be required to attend a 40-hour sexual offender treatment program.
Evidence, Victim’s Testimony, and Court Evaluation
The judge, Jeong Yeon-ju, considered the victim’s testimonies and records to be consistent and indicative of actual experience. The victim’s diary and post-incident counseling report provided further corroboration. The court acknowledged the significant alignment of the details presented in the victim’s diary and counseling report with the evidence presented in the case.
O Yeong-Su’s Background and Ascension to International Stardom
O Yeong-Su, aged 79, boasts a distinguished career spanning over five decades. However, it was his portrayal of Oh Il-nam in the worldwide sensation Squid Game that propelled him to global fame and earned him a well-deserved Golden Globe nomination. He has previously showcased his talent in disparate roles, including King Lear in the eponymous play and appearances in the popular South Korean TV series, Chocolate.
Support from Women’s Rights Group
Womenlink, a prominent women’s rights group in South Korea, expressed support for the court’s ruling. They stated, “The defendant’s conduct closely resembles that of other theater professionals in the past who sought to conceal their sexual violence by classifying it as ‘favors’ and ‘friendship'”. The group further applauds the victim for her bravery in coming forward and bringing the sexual misconduct to light.
