Squid Game: – North Korea pays tribute to Squid Game

“Squid Game” is the series “everyone” has been talking about for the past month. Now the series’ popularity has also spread to North Korea, but not in exactly the same way as in the rest of the world.

According to Insider and NBC has a North Korean propaganda page praised the series for illuminating the “actual” conditions in the “capitalist south”. Ironically, Netflix does not exist in North Korea, but that does not stop the propaganda machinery.

The North Korean website further writes that “Squid Game” shows the realities of a capitalist society where “people are treated like chess pieces”.

What the propaganda website overlooks in its “review” of the Netflix series is that one of the main characters is the North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok, who in the series does everything she can for a better life – far away from North Korea.

South Korean pop culture is strictly forbidden in North Korea, and Kim Jong-un has, among other things, called K-pop a “cancerous tumor,” according to Insider. The condemnation, however, has led to South Korean border guards playing K-pop at full blast, including the world hit “Gangnam Style”, writes CNN.

Largest in the world

The South Korean thriller series “Squid Game” has topped the charts in a number of countries, and it has been predicted since its release that it could become Netflix’s most watched series ever.

On Wednesday, the prediction became a reality. 111 million viewers have seen “Squid Game” in the first four weeks, which beats the previous record holder “Bridgerton” superbly. It writes Netflix itself on Twitter. The latter series was watched by 82 million viewers in the first four weeks.

Now the series creator says that he is not negative for a new season.

– Writing, producing and directing a series alone was really a big task. The thought of doing the same for a season two makes me a little worried, says series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk to CNN.

– Nothing has been confirmed at the moment, but there are so many who are enthusiastic that I really think about it, he continues.

– Closer to reality

When the series’ director Hwang Dong-hyuk came up with the idea for “Squid Game” over ten years ago, during the global financial crisis, it was not pursued because it was thought to be too far from reality, writes CNN.

“Squid Game” is about a group of people who say yes to joining a game to win a big cash prize. Everyone has a lot of debt. The participants will compete in children’s games and along the way will be eliminated one by one.

The debt crisis in South Korea has nevertheless brought the series ever closer to reality – and several have now stated that they themselves would have participated in such a competition.

Warns

Although the series is very popular, it has caused concern among many. Several of the country’s municipalities have issued warnings about the series and child experts have encouraged parents to better control their children’s media consumption.

– This is not a series young children should see. What worries me is that TikTok copies the toys from the series. If there are so-called “challenges” of “Squid Game”, then in the worst case it can go far beyond the limit of what is safe, said professional leader of Barnevakten, Kjellaug Tonheim Tønnessen to Dagbladet.

The Squid Game has become hugely popular on TikTok and has been viewed almost 30 billion times.
