The police surrounded a squat on Dillenburgstraat in Eindhoven for a while on Friday afternoon. Squatters had moved into an empty commercial building. The police wanted to evacuate the building, but because the squatters had already been inside for more than 24 hours, that was not possible.
A building owner may not simply evict squatters. Every eviction violates the so-called ‘right of residence’. This is a fundamental right laid down in both the Dutch Constitution and Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Because the squatters have been sheltered in the building for more than 24 hours, they have obtained that right to live.
The owner of the building and the squatters entered into discussions under the watchful eye of the police. They hope to make agreements with each other to find a solution together. If this does not work, the property owner will have to enforce an eviction in court. If the squatters do not cause any nuisance during this procedure, the police cannot and may not intervene further.
All police cars have now left.
