Marvel’s Avengers was released a year ago and gave players an interesting story, but a rather awkward experience as a whole. One month after the game’s release, the PC version began to have matchmaking problems and sales figures never really picked up speed. In connection with its latest quarterly report, Square Enix has spoken out about the Avengers situation and simply states that the developers Crystal Dynamics were a bad choice.
Crystal Dynamics has previously worked with single-player experiences such as the Tomb Raider games and masterful Gex and Marvel’s Avengers were the studio’s first major multiplayer venture. According to Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda, Square should have realized that it might be good to choose the right studio for the right purpose, and in this case, Crystal Dynamics was not.
Nonetheless, taking on the GaaS model highlighted issues that we are likely to face in future game development efforts such as the need to select game designs that mesh with the unique attributes and tastes of our studios and development teams. While the new challenge that we tackled with this title produced a disappointing outcome, we are certain that the GaaS approach will grow in importance as gaming becomes more service oriented. How we go about creating new experiences by incorporating this trend into our game design is a key question that we will need to answer going forward.
