Spyware Controversy: Pegasus, NSO Group, and Potential European Involvement

Pegasus was developed by the Israeli company NSO Group, and spyware-infected smartphones allow interested parties to obtain their messages, photos, emails, record conversations, secretly activate microphones and cameras.

The editors do not rule out that one of the European intelligence services could be involved in installing a spying program on Timchenko’s phone.

According to the “Access Now” version, the main suspects could be European Union (EU) member states that use “Pegasus”, primarily Estonia, Germany or Latvia. Access Now also suspects countries linked to Russia – Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan – which also use spyware.

“Meduza” states that Timchenko’s phone was infected just before a confidential meeting of Russian independent media representatives on February 11 in Berlin.

“Meduza”, the representative of “NSO Group”, stated that the company’s developments “are sold only to allies of the United States and Israel, especially in Western Europe, and only for combating criminals and terrorists – in full accordance with the global interests of the national security of the United States.”
