Protesters demonstrated in front of rocker Bruce Springsteen’s “Springsteen on Broadway” show in New York City on Saturday night, complaining that only vaccinated fans could enter the theater, according to reports.
The protesters raised signs with messages such as “Bruce Springsteen is in favor of segregation on Broadway”; “We demand equal rights”; “Vaccine mandates violate bodily autonomy”; and “My Body, My Choice,” a banner most often held by women advocating for abortion rights.
Sold out show goers were asked to present proof of vaccination to enter the St. James Theater, according to NJ.com.
“Springsteen on Broadway” was the first show to reopen in New York City’s famous theater district after it closed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Theatrely reported.
At times, arguments broke out between protesters and concert goers waiting to have their tickets scanned, but it appeared to remain mostly peaceful, according to reports.

At first, the venue was going to admit only those who received FDA-approved vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson. But after a backlash, the venue updated its policy last week, saying that Oxford’s AstraZeneca vaccine would also be allowed. Many people in Canada have received AstraZeneca.
Jujamcyn Theaters, owner of the St. James Theater, said in a statement: “Following New York State’s amended guidelines, we are now able to welcome guests to Springsteen On Broadway who are fully vaccinated with an FDA-approved vaccine or The OMS”.

Springsteen guitarist Steven Van Zandt tweeted about the policy change: “Many of you have asked. Here is the answer. There were many complications to overcome. Regulations, national, state, city, theater, etc., are constantly changing. Happy ending for fans. «
The theater made an exception to vaccinations for young people under the age of 16, fans with disabilities, or those with “sincere” religious beliefs. They will be required to show proof of a negative test and wear a mask during the concert, according to NJ.com.
