The week starts with a strong westerly wind
Until the end of the traditionally cold February, the weather will remain with temperatures above the usual for the season. Our country remains far from the arctic air masses, which from north to south only manage to reach Ukraine and part of Romania.
On Monday, an unstable cold atmospheric front will pass over the country. The cloudiness will be variable – more significant in the areas of Eastern Bulgaria with the potential for minor and short-term rainfall. In the west, the clouds will be dynamic, with frequent breaks. The day will be windy, with particularly strong gusts in the early afternoon in the mountains, the Danube plain and the western parts of Thrace. Daytime temperatures will hover around 10-15 degrees.
Tuesday and Wednesday we are expecting sunny weather with minimal cloudiness and high daytime temperatures up to around 20 degrees. From Wednesday, the wind will decrease and calm down. On Thursday and Friday, the clouds will be more with short-term, local precipitation. Daytime temperatures will drop slightly. Weekends will be warm for February. The cloudiness will be dynamic with breaks, without precipitation.
The last week of February will begin with the invasion of another portion of warm Mediterranean air, due to which daytime temperatures will remain with spring values. There is an increased probability of precipitation in the last days of the month, when an area of low atmospheric pressure will form over the Balkans. If the current forecasts are maintained, the next month of March will also begin with dynamic weather, and it is possible that Baba Marta will surprise us with snow at the beginning.
In the high part of the mountains there is a stable snow cover at this stage. According to PSS data in Aleko (Vitosha) it is around 50 cm, in Borovets (Rila) – 100 cm, in Banderishka Polyana in Bansko (Pirin) – 60 cm, in Pamporovo (Rhodope) – 60 cm. Dynamic temperatures, however, create prerequisites for snowmelt and increased avalanche danger. As current forecasts hold, more significant new snowfall is expected in early March.
