Sprawling fire “with great intensity” in Vila Verde

João Paulo Fernandes, a man who killed his ex-wife with 18 stabs in September 2019, in the Praça da Justiça, in Braga, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the court declared today. He is also ordered to pay 165 thousand euros to the victim’s children.

The ex-wife, Gabriela Monteiro, was an employee of Theatro Circo.

“It serves to reflect on all the harm it caused, not only to the woman, but to the whole family, especially to Gabriela’s children,” said the judge in the sentence.

The MP considered that the crime stemmed from the fact that the defendant never accepted the divorce, registered in July 2019.

The facts took place on September 18, at 10:00 pm, when the woman appeared at Travessa da Praça da Justiça, in Braga, to meet with the accused, acceding to the request that he had made.

According to the prosecution, in the course of the meeting, the defendant, “who never accepted the separation and tried unsuccessfully to resume, started an argument with the victim”, ending up stabbing her, “at least 18 times”, with a razor, in the head, neck, chest and left upper limb, killing her ”.

After the crime, which took place in the square bordering the Court, he went to a PSP police station located 100 meters from the scene.

The death of Gabriela, 46, who was an employee at the Theatro Circo, in Braga, caused a great deal of regret in the city, which paid tribute to her, with more than 500 people on silent vigil outside the doors where she worked, in full historic city center.
