Spotify Testing Paid Lyrics Feature to Boost Subscribers

Foreign media reported on the 5th (local time) that Spotify, the world’s largest music streaming platform, is testing a paid lyrics function for some free users in order to increase paid subscribers.

Reportedly, over the past few days, some free Spotify users have been prompted to “enjoy the lyrics in Spotify Premium” when playing music.

Spotify acknowledged in a statement that “Lyrics Paywall is currently being tested with some free users,” but did not say why the test was conducted or if it would apply to all users.

Meanwhile, Spotify ad-supported or free subscribers reached 343 million, up 34% from last year. On the other hand, the number of paid subscribers increased by 17% to 220 million.
