Spotify Straightens Free Verbal Features After U-Turn Ruling

JAKARTA- Spotify has decided to return the Verrice features to users for free after previously charging a subscription fee for Verrice access during a limited trial last year.

Previously, Spotify had given lyrics access, including a time-synced lyrics update introduced in 2021, to all users. However, last year, Spotify ran a test by putting lyrics behind the subscription paywall, preventing free users from seeing them anymore. The test initially seemed successful, so Spotify rolled it out globally in May of this year.

However, Engadget noted that the company has made the decision to reverse the policy. Free users were previously only allowed to track lyrics for three songs per month, but now Spotify has removed the limit. Free users can now view all lyrics without restriction.

“At Spotify, we’re always testing and iterating. That means the availability of our features may vary between tiers and across markets and devices,” a Spotify spokesperson was quoted as saying by VOI to Engadget. “Over the coming weeks, we’ll be expanding the availability of lyrics for Spotify Free users so that more people can enjoy seeing more of the world’s lyrics.”
