Spotify phishing emails in circulation

Spotify users should beware of false emails from the music provider. These are most likely phishing attempts. How to spot a possible scam.

Fake Spotify emails are currently circulating, which criminals send to gain access to users’ accounts. The Austrian consumer protection portal “Watchlist Internet” warns of this.

According to this, Spotify users receive emails with the sender “Spotify invoice”, which shows a problem with a payment. According to the portal, customers are asked to click a button that leads to a fake Spotify login page.

Consumer advocates warn that anyone who enters their data there sends it directly to the criminals. It is possible that access to the Spotify account could also be lost.

According to portal information, the scam can be recognized quite easily by the always same wording:

“We can’t bill you. We hate breaking bad news, but there’s a problem with your preferred payment method. Follow these steps to help us resolve this issue. Your bill.” The subject is also the same: “Your bill 3947291442 requires payment”.

This is how phishing attempts can be detected

In order not to fall for such fake news, the Austrian consumer advocates give a few tips to be able to react quickly. Clear identifiers are:

  • Spelling and grammatical errors and incorrect capitalization: As can be seen in this example, there are errors in the subject. Real emails are always error-free.
  • Check the sender of the e-mail: You should compare the sender (in this case “rechnung1 @ application.com”) with the provider on the Internet or with old e-mails.
  • Check the reason for the letter: It is best to compare the information in the account to see whether the claim can be correct. In addition, according to the consumer advocates, Spotify does not ask you to send personal data by e-mail.
  • Where does the link go? To do this, place the mouse pointer on the field and display the Internet address without clicking on it. If an implausible link appears, consumer advocates advise against clicking on it.

If you clicked on it despite all caution, you should follow these steps: reset your password, contact Spotify if you can no longer access the account and forward the email to Spotify. Then report it to the police.
