Spotify HiFi: the music streaming giant postpones the feature

While the Spotify HiFi offer was expected for this year, it will not be for now. No date has yet been communicated.

This year, Apple Music launched lossless audio and the prices for HiFi listening have also fallen at Amazon and Tidal. But the music streaming giant Spotify still has not launched its formula for better sound quality, which would allow you to enjoy audio files in CD quality (16-bit, 44.1 kHz).

Spotify HiFi was first announced in February, but we’re getting into 2022 and that still hasn’t rolled out. However, the Swedish company had estimated that a launch would take place “Later this year”. At the time, Spotify even said that HiFi would be available in certain markets and that more details would be shared except that nothing was provided in the last 10 months.

American media The Verge recalls that during this time, the competitors did not wait. Apple Music launched high-resolution, lossless audio in June to deliver improved audio quality at no extra cost. Amazon Music and Tidal also offer the functionality, from the classic subscription.

A “HiFi” button spotted in the Spotify app in May, however, suggested that it could have been done soon, while a video showing the HiFi functionality had leaked in August. This year the company has been pretty silent on the subject and has been talking a lot about podcasts instead.

Postponement to a later date

It is finally the German site Golem who announced that “The launch of Spotify HiFi has been postponed indefinitely”. The site did have a response from Spotify about the arrival of this formula:

“Artists and fans have told us that Spotify HiFi is important to them. We agree and look forward to bringing the Spotify HiFi experience to our premium users in the future, but we cannot provide further details yet ”.

It could be that Spotify has doubts about launching such a feature, or that it is no longer in such a rush to launch it. It must also be said that there is no longer a financial objective because its competitors like Apple already offer streaming of high sound quality without asking more from users. Another reason could be legal: Spotify could have found itself in a delicate situation by updating its musical offerings for HiFi.

Spotify HiFi would therefore not be available until 2022.
