Spotify Ends Payment Service through Apple App Store: What You Need to Know

Subscribed users Spotify Of Apple now it’s no longer possible to pay through the App Store, as Spotify is reportedly ending the service. Previously in 2014 and 2016, premium Spotify subscribers could sign up directly through the App Store between 2014 and 2016.

Back then, both companies were very vocal about their feelings regarding digital storefronts and their fees, with Spotify constantly stating that Apple should waive the 30% App Store tax.

Spotify removed the ability for new subscribers who subscribed to the Premium service to do so through the App Store in 2016. However, as Variety reports, that option will also be removed soon.

The report says that Spotify has informed customers who are still paying for their Premium subscription through Apple billing that Spotify will no longer accept that form of payment.

After a customer’s last billing period ends, if they don’t change their payment method, they’ll automatically switch to Spotify’s ad-supported free tier.

The email goes on to say that if the customer wants to keep their Premium subscription, they will need to re-subscribe after the last billing period has ended and the account has been moved to a free account.

Subscribers must select one of Spotify’s currently supported payment methods to maintain their subscription.

The feud between Apple and Spotify has been going on for years. It even got to the point where Spotify filed an anti-competition complaint in the European Union in 2019.

Launching from Apple Insider, Friday (7/7/2023) Spotify has said that Apple One, Apple’s subscription plan, which includes Apple Music, is a threat to collective freedoms.

Recently, Apple said it had changed its rules on the App Store and for developers enough to satisfy Spotify’s complaints against the company in the European Union.

This includes marking some apps, such as Spotify as a reader app, that can connect outside of the app for users to manage their account information or create new accounts.

Interestingly, Spotify continues to argue that Apple is using its dominant market position to continue its anti-competitive behavior. Apple, of course, has often pointed to the fact that Spotify remains the dominant music streaming service in the market with Apple Music coming in at a close second.
