Spotify is once again at loggerheads with Apple, accusing the company of violating Spotify Connect functionality. Spotify claims that recent changes to iOS have broken the ability to control volume using the iPhone’s physical buttons when using Spotify Connect.
What is known
Previously, users could use these buttons to control the volume on connected devices, but now they must use the volume control in the Spotify app.
Spotify believes this violates the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires companies like Apple to ensure that hardware and software features work together effectively.
Notably, Apple allows the iPhone’s volume buttons to be used to control volume on its devices, such as the HomePod and Apple TV, but not on third-party platforms.
Spotify has asked Apple to grant similar access to third-party developers. The company has added a new feature to its iOS app that notifies users when they need to use the in-app volume controls.
