The Lebanese politician, Muhammad Obaid, regretted “the victims that fall in the Palestinian camp of Ain al-Hilweh, which add to the suffering of its people, because of extremist groups that have nothing to do with Palestine and its liberation, and most of them are composed of Palestinians and Syrians who fled from Nahr al-Bared camp to Syria and then to Lebanon, and this is war.” It is not directed against Israel, rather it is internal against the Palestinian people and their youth.”

In an interview via “Spot Shot” within the “Point of View” programme, Obeid said: “It is required to put controls in place for this camp to prevent terrorists from stationing inside it, otherwise we may reach Nahr al-Bared 2, and this matter will be costly for the Palestinians and the Lebanese alike. Lebanon is not an arena for Palestinian fighting, nor Palestine can be liberated from Lebanon, which has fully fulfilled its duty towards the Palestinian cause since 1948 and paid a heavy price as a result of the armed Palestinian presence, which led to a civil war without Palestine being liberated.

He added, “Whoever wants to fight Israel can do so from the Palestinian interior and not through Lebanon, as the borders are open to them and everyone can infiltrate into the interior. Lebanon welcomed the Palestinian brothers humanly and socially, and not the takfiri military presence that has escaped inside the camps, which only serves the Israeli enemy. We are with the people.” The Palestinians are with the right of return, but we are not an arena for conflict.”

He continued, “The Lebanese army is carrying out its duties in the vicinity of the camp, protecting our people in Sidon without interfering in the battles, but at some point, if the armed groups go crazy and attack them or the civilians, they will not remain idly by, but that requires a political decision, bearing in mind that what It was done by the Lebanese army at the level of maintaining security and stability, which is very important, and its work led to the return of tourists and expatriates to Lebanon. Baalbek today, for example, is a model city made by the sacrifices of the Lebanese army.

He also referred to the ongoing dialogue between the Free Patriotic Movement and Hezbollah, in which “two issues are raised, the establishment of the trust fund and expanded financial decentralization, i.e. disguised federalism, which is contrary to what was stated in the Taef Accord. As for the trust fund, it is different from the sovereign fund and aims to manage and invest state assets such as electricity and communications.” It is a continuation of the previous quota funds, i.e. the Fund for the South, the Displaced, and the Development and Reconstruction Fund. Instead of canceling these funds, we will add one to them.”

And he added, “The meeting with the official of the Liaison and Coordination Unit in Hezbollah, Wafiq Safa, and the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Gebran Bassil, raised these issues, but the movement has not yet sent any written vision in this regard, and the question is if they both agree, is that enough to elect a president? Of course not.” Because we must consider the opinion of the rest of the Lebanese parties.

He pointed out that “Bassil justifies his negotiations with the party on the grounds that he is working to secure gains for the Lebanese and Christians in exchange for a great sacrifice in the presidential issue, such as electing the head of the Marada Movement, Suleiman Franjieh, but the truth is that after the last session to elect a president for the republic, Basil and others felt that the name of a leader The army, Joseph Aoun, has become strongly proposed, even if it was not mentioned by name at the table of the Five-Year Committee in Doha, and therefore it went in the direction of the party to block the path of the army commander. But the party, in my estimation, when the settlements mature and it becomes possible to come up with an actual solution, it can go in the direction of electing the army commander and will not be away.”

Obeid concluded by referring to “the initiative of the French special envoy to Lebanon, Jean-Yves Le Drian, whose mission is to seek to hold a consultation table in the Pine Palace in Beirut under French auspices that includes all Lebanese parties in an attempt, which may be the last, to ripen a president within a deadline not exceeding next September.”
