Sportsmen of the year: Who to succeed Simone Biles and Julian Alaphilippe?

It is a tradition to which we are very attached. Since 2004, the editorial staff of Eurosport.fr has revealed at the end of December its ranking of sports personalities of the past year. 25 members of our team took part in the vote to designate the sportsman of the year and the French sportsman of 2020.

This year 2020 has been special, of course, partly truncated at the level of the sports calendar because of the coronavirus pandemic which has disrupted the whole planet, including athletically. Despite everything, we decided to establish our two rankings as usual.

From Monday, we will therefore unveil the first 10 of our two rankings according to a countdown which will begin this Monday, December 21. You will then be able to discover the sportsmen classified in 10th place of our Top 10 France and our Top 10 world. Then, Tuesday, it will be the turn of the champions ranked 9th, and so on. The two winners will be announced on Wednesday, December 30.

As a reminder, here is the operating mode for each of the voters:

  • There are two rankings: a French Top 10, an international Top 10. In the event of a tie in points, the number of citations decides between the different athletes.
  • Each of the 25 voters gives 10 names for each of the two rankings. The first receives ten points, the second nine points and so on until the 10th, who is awarded a point. The points are then accumulated.
  • There may be French people in the international Top 10, but obviously not the other way around.
  • It is only about individualities. No collective can appear in this classification. The only exception are inseparable duets, such as Papadakis-Cizeron, or Houin-Azou.
  • The rankings are mixed. No separate rankings for men and women.

France ranking

The record holder in this area remains Sébastien Loeb, crowned four times. Swimming, on the other hand, is the only sport to have dedicated four different champions (Laure Manaudou, Alain Bernard and Yannick Agnel in Olympic year, and Florent Manaudou in 2015). Last year, Julian Alaphilippe was consecrated. The cyclist of the Deceuninck – Quick Step team will he succeed himself, like Martin Fourcade in 2017 and 2018, and Sébastien Loeb, author of a treble between 2009 and 2011?

World Awards

Two sports monopolize most of the titles: tennis and athletics. These two disciplines have accumulated 12 victories (6 each) over the first 15 editions. If Roger Federer has three victories, the absolute record holder is called Usain Bolt, crowned by the editorial staff of Eurosport.fr in 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2016. In 2019, it is the American gymnast Simone Biles who was honored by our writing. She was the first woman to put her name on our list, ahead of another champion, her compatriot, the skier Mikaela Shiffrin.
